Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that uses breast implants to enhance the size and contour of the breasts, to balance the breast size if differences exist, to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy and as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

The implants are made of silicone shell, which is filled with silicone gel or cohesive silicone gel.

Most implants are using these fillers, as the substance provides best durability, malleability and most form-stable. It resembles breast tissue to a certain degree, rendering more natural-looking breasts in appearance and feel.

A roughened, textured surface on the silicone shell is preferable by some surgeons to a smooth surface, as it was thought to cause less capsular fibrosis, and contraction.

Many women are still apprehensive about perceived health risks associated with silicone.

Validation of safety regarding systemic autoimmune disease has been restored although local inflammatory reaction to free silicone can produce some cosmetic issues.

However, rupture of implants is now much less of an occurrence with the use of current generation implants that are thicker, with multi-layered shells and additional barrier layers, and use of a more cohesive and form stable gels as fillers.

As for other concerns, independent committee of scientists reported no causal link between silicone implants and cancer.

Women with breast implants will have slight impairment results from screening mammography, which is why special displacement techniques are required together with ultrasound or MRI to complete work-ups.

Phuket Aesthetic Centre is concerned about breast health and cancer screening in order to catch small problems earlier.

Your safety will be assured with recommendations to have pre-procedure examination and mammography screening for cancer.

Technique and Placement of Implants
Implants are placed in pockets either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the pectoral muscle which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall.

The type, profile and method of inserting and positioning your implant will depend on your anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation.

The incision can be made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), or in the armpit.
Considerations include amount of breast tissue, degree of breast ptosis, and thickness of the pectoral muscles, among other factors.

Plastic surgeons at Phuket Aesthetic Centre are famed for their advanced operative methods, using laparoscopic techniques.

Implants can be inserted using a relatively small and remote incision, also allowing the surgeon to intra-operatively adjust angle and position of implants to easily correct asymmetry of breasts.

The operation in itself usually takes about one to two hours, and is carried out when the patient is fully anesthetized or in “twilight” anaesthesia, as appropriate.

Risks and Local Complications.
As with any surgical procedures, complications are a natural occurrence.
Potential complications after breast augmentation include:

  Temporary soreness, bruising and swelling
  Hematoma
  Infection
  Changes in nipple sensation
  Galactorrhea
  Capsular contracture
  Implant rupture or displacement
  Wrinkling

It is very important that all patients are aware of the risks associated with surgery.
During your consultation with our plastic surgeon, doctor will inform you about breast augmentation's particular risks and will answer any questions you may have.

It is important to understand that implant selection and operative techniques must be based on your tissue and body characteristics, breast envelope thickness and compliance, asymmetries, breast size, shape and nipple areola position, in order to achieve a more realistic and natural result.
